Anthony N. - Decorated D-Day Veteran

WFC recently lost one of our “greatest” clients – Anthony N. truly personified the World War II veterans for whom Tom Brokaw coined the term our “Greatest Generation.”

Anthony, a soldier in the 29th Infantry Division, was among the D-Day reinforcements to follow the first wave to land upon Omaha Beach at Normandy. Wounded twice during the war, he earned two Purple Hearts, which he kept in a case along with a 2-inch shrapnel piece from a German shell that tore through the back of his leg.

At age 96, Anthony outlived his family by eight years, including his wife and son. Attorney Glen Cunningham offered significant support to Anthony after his tragic family losses. The attorney’s mother was a close friend of Anthony’s wife. Mr. Cunningham was Anthony’s power of attorney and advocated for him to downsize from his home in Ardsley to the Atria Woodlands adult care facility in 2016.

The Executive Director of Atria Woodlands, Margarida Velardo, remembered WFC Founder Glenn Lane from when he had placed his parents there a few years earlier. Ms. Velardo referred Anthony to WFC, and Caregiver Kwaku Bediako was assigned to him from the very beginning in 2016.

Not only was Anthony one of our longest-tenured clients, but he also endeared himself by the close relationship he developed with Kwaku – the sole WFC caregiver during his entire six years of service.

Kwaku was devoted to Anthony. He didn’t take any days off, staying with Natiello 7 days/week, 24 hours/day. He would take off for 12 hours every 2nd or 3rd week to be with his family (and was relieved during that time by the same person all six years.) Kwaku accompanied Anthony to the Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, NY, every week to visit his wife and son.

Kwaku also cared for the two toy Yorkies and toy poodle Anthony brought with him to Atria Woodlands. WFC nurses went beyond medication management for Anthony by advocating for his pets. Like the rest of his family, Anthony outlived his beloved dogs too.

To honor his years of service with Anthony, Kwaku Bediako was named WFC’s June 2022 Caregiver of the Month. It’s not the first time we’ve recognized Kwaku’s extraordinary level of caregiving for Anthony – he was honored as the WFC Aide of the Year at a county-wide home care industry dinner in 2018. When Anthony learned Kwaku was to be celebrated as Aide of the Year, he insisted on attending the event alongside him.

Asked if he considers himself a hero, Anthony says, “No,” adding,” They gave me a job to do. The lesson is love your country, love the world, love the people.”

We all loved him, especially Caregiver Kwaku, and we will remember him as a hero of the Greatest Generation.
