COVID Stories of Care | Dignity and Grace at End-of-Life

Celebrating Our Clients

WFC client teams have been putting in extraordinary end-of-life work during this critical Coronavirus passage of time.

We lost Mark P. last week. He was 95 years old. He had been on service with us for the past year and received round-the-clock care by the same team of 4-5 caregivers.

He lived with his wife, and had a son and daughter-in-law close by who were very involved. He found us from a referral from his granddaughter from her close friend, a Geriatric Care Manager, Felicia Putter.

In addition to being a devoted family man, he was a U.S. Air Force Veteran who was very passionate about his service. Mark was a very likable man, with a great sense of humor. Whenever our nurse, Annette visited him, he always had funny stories to share with her. Even though Annette had a full schedule, she always found time to listen.

At one point, Mr. P. was doing so well, he was thinking of reducing his caregiver hours. His wife asked, “why do want to keep Xioabin for all those hours?” He replied, “She makes me laugh!”

As time went by, Mr. P. declined and was placed on Hospice care. He was still very positive, funny, and wanted to continue his normal routines such as watching the stock market, visiting the VA, and swim at the community pool.

In his last hours, WFC aides were there to provide comfort and support his family. From the WFC nurse to the caregiving team on the case, Mark P.’s family expressed their gratitude for our services.

He will be dearly missed.

Lunch is on Us, Osborn!

We continue to appreciate the selfless work that healthcare employees are putting in at our partner Senior Living facilities. Last week, we catered a lunch to Assisted Living and H.O.P.E Center (Memory Care) at The Osborn in Rye, NY.

On a rainy, Friday, April 24th, Catherine Lanza, our Director of Business Development, picked up a superb lunch for 20 amazing nurses and HHA’s at The Osborn Assisted Living and H.O.P.E Center in Rye, NY.  The H.O.P.E Center is the Memory Care center and one of the more challenging units to work in at The Osborn.

The Rye Country Store, a gourmet grocery store, provided sandwiches, salads, and dessert in COVID friendly packaging.  Thank you to Claire, who put everything together, and delivered everything to Catherine’s car in a neat and orderly fashion.

Brittaney Jones-Alleyne, Resident Services Supervisor, from The Osborn met Catherine at the entrance with a cart and a smile on a dreadfully rainy day!  Brittaney said everyone loved it and it felt so good to be appreciated and recognized!

Please Donate Blood

The New York Blood Center is conducting an outreach for blood donations at this critical time during the Coronavirus crisis. Our own Catherine Lanza represented WFC as blood donor last week, and here is her account:

donate blood

I went to the New York Blood center after making my appointment on-line. It was truly an easy and stress-free process. When you arrive, you immediately get your temperature taken by a nurse with a disposable thermometer. Next a sanitized computer awaits you to fill out a questionnaire.

A blood sample is taken, and if all is well with your vitals, you are taken over to another sanitized station, and greeted by a nurse to get started with the process of giving blood.

The center was not crowded, and I did not feel overwhelmed or scared at any point. The process was over in about 20 minutes, and then I was invited to have a drink and a snack.

The staff informed me that they were now taking the plasma of COVID-19 survivors, so they could use the antibodies for current COVID-19 patients. Good information to have, so others can help the cause!

We Are Hiring

WFC is open for business and actively caring for our clients as well as our workforce. We continue to recruit in anticipation of growth in the business to support client demand as people are recovering and as we continue to expand our geographic coverage area. Accordingly, we are hiring new HHA’s and incentivizing our family of employees. We have a Referral Bonus Program in place for staff, nurses and caregivers to receive a cash bonus when a referred new employee has completed a requisite number of working hours.

We rolled out the Hero Pay Plan to celebrate our hardworking team members who are tirelessly working with clients through this stressful period. This program will pay caregivers additional bonuses.

  • Hero Pay: 8-week program that pays caregivers additional bonuses based on hours worked
  • Referral Bonus Program: +$350 when a referred new referred employee completes 40 hours

These times of safe-distancing and hyper safety awareness demand a rethinking of the way(s) in which recruitment is conducted. We are proud to launch a new virtual recruiting process for applicants that is user-friendly and applies new technology to support it.
