Graceful Aging, Romance, and Love on Mother’s Day

This year’s Mother’s Day weekend was the first for my wife and me without both of our moms. The last few were very different as their illnesses progressed, but we were both emotional about the day itself with all of the memories it brings back.

We decided to do something enjoyable together and chanced upon an unusual show in NYC: Herb Alpert performing with his wife, Lani Hall, in a small venue.

Herb Alpert has been a powerhouse music industry figure from the ’70s through today, originally with his band, The Tijuana Brass, his record label, A&M Records, and by selling 70 million records — earning 8 Grammy Awards.

To learn more about Herb Alpert, watch this CBS Sunday Morning episode.

As only music can do, the very familiar ‘evergreen’ music sent us back to a happy time.

The show struck home on so many levels. As only music can do, the very familiar ‘evergreen’ music (as Herb put it) sent us back to a happy time. A time when my wife and I could each recall loving memories of our moms and grandparents.

They were fans of the music and even had that famous album cover gracing their record cabinets:

More than just the music was the tremendous energy and sound accompanied by some great videos and many scenes of Herb Alpert’s artwork. He is 84 and Lani is 73.

Their amazing chemistry after 45 years of marriage and obviously close collaboration was totally overwhelming and made the night inspirational.

It was moving to see how they both have given back, both during this show and in the videos from their current projects and over the last 5 decades.

On what started out as an emotional day, we were uplifted on multiple fronts: aging gracefully, continuing to do what you love with who you love.

It reminded us of our own personal evolution caring for aging parents with Alzheimer’s, and how that experience led us to start Westchester Family Care.

We, too, have wanted to give back. The more profound takeaway of the concert was observing two people taking the giving back to a higher level.

On what started out as an emotional day, we were uplifted on multiple fronts: aging gracefully, continuing to do what you love with who you love (even more remarkable given he is one of our wealthiest and most philanthropic entertainers).

And all of this passionate wisdom obtained from a last-minute event!

It felt good on this Mother’s Day to remember the good times with our moms and how they raised us to give back.

It felt good to be brought to tears by many of the videos and songs about their unwavering commitment and love with some laughs and recollections of our moms and grandparents.

It felt good to be reminded by Herb Alpert and Lani Hall to live life fully each day and with commitment to serve others.

It felt good on this Mother’s Day to remember the good times with our moms and how they raised us to give back.
