COVID Stories of Care | Recovery and Rebuilding

Notes from Glenn entering the 13th week of supporting our Clients and Caregivers, with office team & nurses working remotely.

Recovery Continues

We continue to see things returning to (the new) normal. As Westchester County begins to enter Phase 2 of Reopening, WFC continues to experience an uptick in client referrals. As mentioned last week, in-home caregiving is increasingly in demand as a preferred way for our seniors to stay safe.

Thanks to Our ‘Live-In’ Caregivers & Clients

A hallmark of the pandemic that we will remember for some time is how we ‘sheltered in place.’ Our Live-In programs continue to be popular to reduce the number of shift changes and resulting traffic in our clients’ homes.  Two of our caregivers – have agreed to live in with their longtime clients and have basically been in place for the last three months.

  • Kwaku lives-in with a male client who lives in a senior care facility. They have always been close and really enjoy each other other’s company along with the client’s Yorkshire Terriers who are always entertaining. Kwaku has only been out a few times since March.
  • Solo had specifically requested a long-term live-in client. We introduced her and a client suffering from Dementia whose family had not been happy with other caregivers and frequent shift changes from other agencies. They have sheltered in place for the last three months without a break.

As she has done on numerous occasions for clients and others during COVID-19, Catherine Lanza, our Director of Business Development, shopped for Solo last week for some essentials and other welcome treats.  Thanks to Kwaku and Solo for going above and beyond for their clients.

We are grateful to all caregivers and our clients and very pleased with how everybody is faring under quite abnormal circumstances. We’ve expressed our gratitude by extending the 2-month Hero Bonus to the workforce for a third month in June.

Health Futures – Taking Stock in You Radio Show

My friend and fellow home care CEO Bob Roth from Cypress Homecare in Arizona invited me to participate in his weekly Radio Show last Friday.  I was part of a panel discussion with Chris Foster from A Hand To Hold in Georgia and Gary Skole from Home to Stay in New Jersey.  I was flattered to be part of a panel with many decades of combined experience in Home Care.

“Catherine Goes to” …

The Knolls Assisted Living in Valhalla

Catherine Lanza, Director of Business Development, scored a home run with new appreciation baskets to residents of our Partner Facilities. The baskets are prepared for residents in senior care facilities who are ‘sheltering in place’ in their rooms. This past week she gifted The Knolls Assisted Living in Valhalla.

Here’s Catherine account:

Just when I thought I was running out of ideas, I came across adult coloring book sets with colored pencils and a sharpener!  I immediately contacted Tiffany Malcolm, Director of Social Work at The Knolls Assisted Living in Valhalla.  She was on board with the idea, and a delivery was made on June 11th with coloring books and snacks.

Twenty lucky residents were gifted with the books, and an extra book went to Tiffany.  Tiffany sent me a note about how grateful they were for the donation and how the residents enjoyed the books and the snacks.  Thank you, Tiffany!  You made my day!

‘Meeting of the Minds’: Virtual Conference on Alzheimer’s Disease

WFC is co-sponsoring a powerful 4-day video conference offered by the Hudson Valley Alzheimer’s Association and will take place from June 15 – June 18. Catherine Lanza is giving a video introduction of a session on June 15th titled,” Understanding Alzheimer’s and Dementia”, by Deborah Disbrow.  Hosting the conference is award-winning actor and director, David Hyde Pierce, one of the Alzheimer’s Association Celebrity Champions, along with Dr. Tia Powell, author of “Dementia Reimagined”, director of Montefiore-Einstein Center for Bioethics.

Remembering Dad on Father’s Day

We were especially touched watching a segment on CBS Sunday morning with Ron Howard and his daughter Bryce Dallas Howard on being a father and her new feature on “Dads.”  With touching remembrances and humor she has distilled the meaning of being a father.
