Valda Brown

Meet Valda Brown, a WFC Caregiver of the Month. Valda has been providing outstanding home care services to aging seniors for 30+ years. After all this time, her ‘secret’ to successful caregiving is simple:
“I treat people like people.”
           -Valda Brown, 30-year Caregiver
Valda also believes that delivering exceptional home care services comes from experience, hard work, being adaptable to change, and buckets of patience. As an example, she cites a client whose dementia has gotten worse during the year Valda has been with her. Valda noticed a cognitive decline and more frequent mood changes in her client and made appropriate adjustments in her caregiving efforts to be more patient and to explain things several times.

To her credit, Valda feels ready for the challenges of caring for dementia patients because, she says, the education caregivers are receiving these days is more functional and enlightened than in the past. While every client case is different, Valda is prepared for any situation because she brings a powerful combination of skills to the job … extensive training and three decades of experience working with the elderly.

For much of Valda’s career, she has been a CNA working primarily with patients in Nursing Homes. About 5-6 years ago, someone told her about a new home care agency that was opening and offering free transition classes for CNAs to add the NY HHA Certification. New York Licensed CNAs who are looking to add HHA certification and interested in providing quality one-on-one care in a private home setting can take these classes and then get employment with the home care agency.

“That offer turned out to be from Glenn Lane and Westchester Family Care which trained and hired me as a Home Health Aide, and it was the best thing to happen to me for my career.”

Ever since coming onboard, Valda does in-home care with WFC clients and also continues to work at Nursing Homes. Little wonder that this hard-working HHA has been honored as Caregiver of the Month!

Valda’s vast experience working with the elderly comes into play when she reflects on her working relationship with WFC.

“I’ve been with WFC since their beginning. I like what I do. I do my best.
And they are the best agency.”

Valda gets very specific about why she likes working with WFC so much:

“Can you believe that, when I got COVID, WFC paid me every week and checked up on me every day? In the Nursing Home where I worked, I had to resign. That’s the WFC difference: Glenn and Kenneth and Jessica in the office … they take care of me. And Melissa prayed with me during my COVID.”

We appreciate you too, Valda. Congratulations on being our Caregiver of the Month.
