WFC Best Practices: Recruiting, Hiring, and Retention

A Different Kind of Home Care Agency

Westchester Family Care (WFC) is ending the most challenging in our five-year history and business has recovered to pre-COVID levels, for which we are very grateful. With such growth come increases in hiring, and we are proud of our best practices in recruitment, hiring, and retention; we believe they are key elements of our working culture and how Westchester Family Care distinguishes itself to caregivers and clients alike. We offer industry-leading compensation, flexible work shifts, innovative benefits and recognition programs, and ongoing training and development.

WFC was born out of Founder Glenn Lane’s triple-threat experience of needing to care for his mother, mother-in-law, and her sister who were all diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. The ordeal set him on a course to create a different kind of home care agency: one that cares deeply for the caregiver as much as the client.

“So why do we care? We care because we understand the pain, the sadness, and the confusion. We’ve been there. We understand that every client and personal situation is different and requires an individual, customized solution from only the best caregivers.”

– Glenn Lane, Founder & CEO

We are always thinking about what WFC can do to differentiate ourselves to keep our progressive sights on how to recruit and incentivize the top notch caregivers our clients deserve. Taking cues from Glenn Lane’s life experience, we are driven by a desire to attract the most compassionate and qualified caregivers and then treat both staff and HHA’s with respect and professionalism. WFC believes this can only be accomplished by offering top-tier compensation, benefits, training and a supportive, family culture.

WFC Caregivers Enjoy Working w/‘Greatest Generation’ Clients

Recruiting, Compensation and Hiring

WFC is proud of our high employee and client satisfaction ratings. WFC caregivers derive satisfaction and enjoyment from working one-to-one with our “Greatest Generation” clients in the safety and comfort of an in-home setting.

In part, these satisfaction ratings derive from our proactive approach to recruitment. Key elements of our compensation include:

  • Competitive Pay for Part‐time, Full‐time, and Live‐in Candidates
  • Annual Pay Raise
  • Sign-On Bonuses
  • Employee Referral Bonuses
  • Paid Sick & Vacation Time Off
  • 401(k) Plan
  • Medical Plan with HSA For Full Time

Additionally, we consider the caregiver’s work situation and professional development:

  • Flexible Shifts, Scheduling Options, and Start Dates
  • Cases Near the Caregiver’s Own Home
  • Free NYS HHA Training Classes
  • Free HHA Transition Classes for CNAs
  • Free HHA Competency Classes for NYS HHAs who haven’t worked for an agency recently

Top -Tier Base Pay / Annual Pay Raise / Employee Hardship Fund

Pay Program and Employment Hardship Fund

As part of our effort to offer leading compensation levels to caregivers, live-in HHAs are currently receiving pay rates at the top end of the market, and both live-in and hourly HHAs will earn the same base pay rate.

In addition the hourly rate for caregivers gets annually adjusted upward with automatic annual pay increases for tenure. For example, a newly hired caregiver can rest assured s(he) will be earning highly competitive industry base hourly rates. More tenured HHAs with say, 3-4 years at WFC, are receiving better-than-average pay because they’ve benefited from automatic pay raises every year. We do this because we believe it’s the right way to treat employees.

In addition to offering innovative payment programs that distinguish WFC from the rest of the industry, in 2021 we are establishing a financial safety net program — an Employee Hardship Fund.  By definition, the fund will be extremely targeted for employees facing immediate unexpected financial issues such as those related to housing, medical or car repairs.

Our WFC Culture

It’s pretty simple: we view our progressive approach to maintaining the total and holistic well-being of our employees – our top-tier compensation, benefits, recognition programs, hardship fund, employee assistance program, flexible schedules, ongoing training and development, etc. — as being part of the many ties that bind caregivers and staff together as the Westchester Family Care family.

And it shows. For the fourth consecutive year, WFC has been designated as a Caring Super Star Home Care Agency of 2021. It is especially meaningful to us because it is based on receiving top ratings from WFC clients.
